MOBILE, Alabama – The Troy University cross country team competed in its first meet of the season on Friday night, at the South Alabama Opener against Auburn and South Alabama.
On the women's side, Troy placed third overall with 69 points in the 4k race. Mikayla Hodges, one of Troy's top returners, led the team with a eighth place finish with a time of 15:28.38, a new personal record. Sophomore Samantha Smith finished next for the Trojans in 12th place at 15:56.51.
"We didn't match the intensity of our competitors," said cross country coach Elliott Blount. "Auburn is a very good team and South Alabama was a bit more prepared today. Once we get everyone firing on all cylinders, we will be fine. Getting some help from the number 3-8 runners on our team will be the key moving forward."
On the men's side, Troy came in third with 83 points. Three freshman led the way for the Trojans in their 6k race. Dylan Ogburn finished in the 18th spot at 20:23.25. Next in line for Troy was another newcomer, Joe Giese, who finished right behind him at 19th at 20:54.64. Troy's third runner across the finish line was Cameron McCutheon, in 21st with a time of 21:07.68.
"The men are very young," Blount said. "We need to learn how to compete. Some of them did, but the others did not. If we want to take the next step, it's important that we answer the bell when the gun goes off."
Next, the Trojans travel back to South Alabama for the Azalea City Classic on September 12.
