TROY, Ala. – Alissa Jones set a new Troy single-game record with 11 shots as the Trojans rolled to a 6-0 victory over Alabama State at the Troy Soccer Complex on Tuesday. The win was also the first for first-year head coach Jason Hamilton.
Â
Jones' five shots on goal produced two goals in the match, she also earned an assist. The previous single-game high for shots was 10 set by three different players, most recently Jill Pinder in 2008. The six goals were the most by the Trojans since beating Alcorn State 7-0 in 2011.
Â
Troy (1-2) pressured Alabama State the entire game, firing 38 shots. Chelsey Williams opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a shot from 22 yards out that screamed past the Hornets keeper and into the back of the net. The goal was Williams' 19th of her career and moved her into a tie for third place in Troy all-time history. Two minutes later, Jones boomed a shot from the same distance to give Troy a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Payton Donley added the Trojans' third goal in the 30th minute on a chip shoot off a corner from Jane Latif.
Â
"I think once we start moving the ball and playing as a team, we can create chances," head coach Jason Hamilton said. "It seemed like one of those games where if we could get one (goal), it was going to open up. We obviously had some good looks and some really good goals, so there is a lot to be happy about."
Â
From there, the Trojans were relentless around the Alabama State net. The Hornets' keeper was able to save a shot off the foot of Annabell Simpson in the 48th minute but the deflection fell directly to Jones, who sacked her second goal. In the 64th minute, freshman Natalie Melillo took a corner kick and curled it just inside the back post to put the Trojans up 5-0. It was the first goal of her career.
Â
The scoring was capped by Latif's chip over the keeper head after receiving a perfectly timed pass from Jones.
Â
Jones' previous career high in shots of six came against Alabama State on Aug. 18, 2011. Williams also set a new career high with eight shots.
Â
Alabama State (1-2) took six shots in the match with just one coming in the second half.
Â
Troy will host Kennesaw State in the Trojan Classic on Friday at 4p.m. The Trojans will also take on Tennessee Tech on Sunday at 3 p.m.
