TROY, Ala. – The Troy University soccer team got off to a quick start and held on late to defeat Kennesaw State 1-0 in the 2014 Trojan Classic at the Troy Soccer Complex on Friday.
Â
Alissa Jones scored in the 6th minute to give the Trojans the early lead. It was the third goal of the season for the junior and 11th of her career.
Â
The play was set up by a cross into the box from Mallary Hedden that was headed by Natalie Melillo to an attacking Jones, who fired a one-time shot that was saved. The deflection fell to Annabell Simpson, but her shot was blocked. After the keeper came off her line, Jones found the ball and the back of the net.
Â
"We wanted to start fast. That was the message in pregame and at halftime," Troy head coach Jason Hamilton said. "We knew it was going to be a battle. When you have a one-goal lead in a game that is tight, it's going to get physical. We had to be ready for that and we're happy with how we finished that game out."
Â
Troy took 10 shots in the game, six on goal. Kennesaw State fired six shots and missing the mark each time.
Â
It was the first career shutout for freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis and the second straight clean sheet for the team as Lewis and Caitlin Buono combined to keep Alabama State off the board on Tuesday.
Â
Troy has now won five consecutive home matches and eight of its last nine.
Â
South Alabama routed Tennessee Tech 5-0 earlier in the day to open the day's action.
Â
The Trojans will be back in action on Sunday as the team hosts Tennessee Tech to wrap up the 2014 Trojan Classic. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
