Trojans Win to Advance at MT Shootout

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Troy men's tennis team defeated Illinois State on Saturday, 4-1, to move to the consolation final at the Middle Tennessee Shootout. Troy will take on either UT Arlington or Southern Illinois on Sunday.
Troy (6-13) took a tight doubles point to get things started on the right foot. Tommy Cundy and Daniel Bustamante first won at No. 2, 6-4. After a loss at No. 1, Mansingh Athare and Sami Ghorbel won, 6-5, at No. 3 to give Troy the opening point.
Gabriel Sciacca Dias won his fifth match in the last six with a 6-1, 6-5 win at No. 1 to put Troy up 2-0.
Illinois State (5-9), who lost in Friday's first round to host Middle Tennessee, got a 6-5, 6-5 win at No. 3 to pull within one at 2-1. However, Sami Ghorbel put the Trojans on the brink of a win with a 5-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2.
After Ghorbel's three-set win, Daniel Bustamante clinched the match with one of his own, 4-6, 6-2, 6-5, at No. 4.
The Trojans are scheduled to play in Sunday's consolation final against the winner of Saturday's match between UT Arlington and Southern Illinois. Sunday's match is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.
