Troy Softball Turns Triple Play, Falls at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy University softball fell to #23 Auburn 13-5 on a cool, windy night at Jane B. Moore Field on Wednesday, but turned in a defensive gem in the third inning.
Â
With runners on first and second and no one out, Auburn center fielder Morgan Estell lined a ball just the left field side of the second base bag. Troy freshman shortstop Becca Hartley gloved the ball and stepped on second for the second out. Hartley then quickly fired the ball to first catching the runner just before returning to the bag to complete a rare 6-3 triple play.
Â
The Tigers (20-4-1) took early advantage of the gusts blowing towards the outfield, which reached 20 mph during the game. Auburn slugged a pair of first inning home runs to help build a nine-run lead.
Â
The Trojans (13-12-2) started to chip away in the second. Rachel Rigney was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before Amanda Winters laced a single to left field. One batter later, Becca Hartley hit a high fly ball that was pushed towards the line by the wind falling in front of the Auburn defender for a double, allowing two runs to score.
Â
Kelsey Bogaards delivered the final blow with a grand slam in the fourth. After walks from Taylor Smartt and Hartley, Troy's Heather Johnston hit a 3-run home run, her second of the season, in the fifth but it would not be enough to fight off the mercy-rule.
Â
Troy will travel to Conway, S.C. over the weekend to play four games in the Chanticleer Showdown hosted by Coastal Carolina.
