Softball Opens Chanticleer Showdown with Win Over Host Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – The Trojans (14-12-2) took down Coastal Carolina (), 6-2, to begin play at the Chanticleer Showdown. Troy used some solid performances from across the board, including a pair of home runs, to earn the win.

Affeldt finished the day 2-of-2 with one run and two RBIs, after entering the game in the fifth. Affeldt was also solid in the circle, earning a 2.1-inning save.

Winters was also solid, picking up one hit while driving in one and scored twice. Kacie McAllister and Ebony Wright each had two hits.
Winters was hit by a pitch to get things moving in the second inning. Winters then advanced to second after a fielder's choice and then came home on a throwing error, putting Troy up 1-0.

The Trojans added two more in the fifth. Becca Hartley drew a walk and advanced to second on a single by Wright. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, both would then come home on a throwing error.

Coastal Carolina narrowed the Trojan lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Kiana Quolas.

Troy would add some insurance in the sixth, with Winters and Affeldt hitting back-to-back home runs. The Trojans then added one more in the seventh, with Affeldt driving in Erica Davis on an RBI single to center field.

Ashley Rainey got the win for Troy, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just two runs. Affeldt pitched 2.1 innings and allowed two hits, earning the save.

Ashley Bagwell took the loss, after allowing five runs in six innings of work.

Troy will play two games on Saturday, beginning with Fordham at 9 a.m. The Trojans will then take on Minnesota at 1:30 p.m.
