Troy Wins Two at Eagle Classic

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Troy softball team (7-8-2) picked up a pair of wins at the Eagle Classic, hosted by Georgia Southern, on Friday. The Trojans took down former Sun Belt foe Middle Tennessee (5-13) 5-4 in the first game and future Sun Belt opponent Georgia Southern (9-5) 2-1 in the second.
Michelle Phelps was tremendous on the day, going 5-of-6 from the plate and driving in two. Heather Johnston also finished with a pair of RBIs, while Erica Davis finished with three hits.Â
Troy returns to the field tomorrow to take on Tennessee State at 10:30 a.m. and Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.
Troy 5, Middle Tennessee 4
The Trojans picked up a 5-4 win over former Sun Belt rival Middle Tennessee in the first game, coming back from down four runs to take the win.
Middle Tennessee scored once in the first, twice in the second and once again in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the fourth.
That's when Troy did its damage, beginning with Ebony Wright. Wright got things stared with a single and advanced to second on an Davis single. Both would then steal, leaving Wright on third and Davis on second. Then Phelps came up clutch yet again, hitting a single through the left side to drive in Wright.
Next up Johnston grounded into a double play, but Erica Davis scored, cutting the Middle Tennessee lead to 4-2.
Troy would pick up the remainder of its runs in the seventh. Jaycee Affeldt drew a walk to get things rolling and was pinch-run for by Leanna Smith. Meg Willis pinch hit for Chandler Griffin and roped a single to right center. She was then pinch-run for by Griffin.
After a fly out, Mackenzie Kayler picked up a single, loading the bases. Alison Milam then drew a walk, narrowing the deficit to just one. Michele Moore came in to pinch-hit and reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Griffin to tie the game at four.
Troy would then win in walk-off fashion, with Davis picking up an RBI single, scoring Kayler from third.
Rachel Rigney got the start for the Trojans but lasted just 1.2 innings, after giving up three runs on five hits. Jaycee Affeldt got the win after pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just one run on two hits.
Troy 2, Georgia Southern 1
The Trojans picked up another win in game two, knocking off host Georgia Southern 2-1. Sara Mock earned the win for the Trojans after allowing five hits while striking out six.
The Trojans got on the board in the first with a two-out RBI single by Phelps, plating Griffin.
Georgia Southern would tie the game up at one in the third on an RBI single by Shelby Morrill.
Griffin led off the bottom of the sixth with a single. Smith would pinch run for Griffin and advanced to second on a single by Milam. Smith then scored on a two-out single by Johnston, putting Troy back ahead.
