Trojans Second Half Surge Falls Short
12/15/2014 10:31:00 PM | Basketball (M)
CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee – The Troy men's basketball team fell to Austin Peay 73-70 at Dave Aaron Arena Monday night. The Trojans fought back from a 16-point deficit in the second-half, but the Governors were able to withstand the Trojans' pressure.
Â
After leading 30-23 coming out of the break, Austin Peay went on a 8-0 lead on its way to a 46-30 lead. Kelton Ford, who tallied a game-high 15 points, came off the bench in the second half to spark the Trojans' near comeback.
Â
The Trojans (4-4) were able to pull themselves within one at 60-59 with just 3:35 remaining in the contest. In that time, Ford accounted for 12 of his career-high 15 points, as his high tempo play on defense helped him find the basket in transition.
Â
The Governors (3-7) were not going to go down without a fight as they went on a 11-2 run to put them up by double-digits at 71-61 with 53 seconds left to play.
Â
Troy battled back from the deficit in large part to its press and quality shooting down the stretch. Troy once again made it a one-possession game with just under three seconds to play as Chris Bilbo hit a trey to cut into Austin Peay's lead at 73-70.
Â
With the Governors with the ball under their basket, they were able to get the ball in with ease as the clock winded down.
Â
Kevin Thomas earned his fourth double-double of the season, eighth of his career as he accounted for 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
Musa Abdul-Aleem, who scored the first eight Trojan points, also paced the Trojans with 15 points, while reeling in a career-high eight boards. Welsey Person added 10 points for the Trojans, his seventh career-game in double figures.
Â
Austin Peay had four Governors in double digits as they were led by Ed Dyson, who tallied 15 points. Chris Horton, the team's leading rebounder, tallied a game-high 13 rebounds.
Â
On the night, Troy shot 46.3 percent, in large part to it's second half spark, when the Trojans shot 55.2 percent going 16-of-29. The Trojans weakness came at the charity stripe where they shot a mere 53.6 percent (15-of-28). This marks the fourth game in a row the Trojans outscored their opponent in the paint, 34-28. The Trojans bench outscored the Governors 17-13.
Â
Â
Troy concludes its non-conference schedule next week when it travels to Thibodaux, Louisiana, to face Nicholls State on Sunday, December 21. Tip off between the Trojans and the Colonels is set for 3:30 p.m.
