Trojans Beat the Buzzer for 1,000th Program Win
12/21/2014 7:17:00 PM | Basketball (M)
THIBODAUX, Louisiana – Musa Abdul-Aleem hit a layup just as time expired to give the Troy men's basketball team a 65-64 win over Nicholls on Sunday at Stopher Gym. It was the 1,000th win in program history.
Â
The waning moments of the game kept fans on edge as Troy had the ball with 9.7 seconds remaining. Trailing by one, 64-63, T.J. Carpenter sunk a pair of free throws to give Nicholls the lead. Chris Bilbo passed the ball to Abdul-Aleem, who drove hard to the basket for a layup. After missing the first shot, he got the rebound on the block and banked the ball in just as the buzzer sounded.
Â
The Trojans (5-4) came out in the second half trailing Nicholls 32-25. The Colonels extended their advantage quickly, as they went on a 9-2 run to take a 14-point lead, 41-27. Troy was unwilling to go down without a fight as it battled tooth and nail to go on a 16-2 run of its own to tie the game, 43-43.
Â
Mostly a back and forth contest, both teams were able to find their groove for a period of time before momentum swung the other way.
Â
Abdul-Aleem led the Trojans with his first double-double performance in a Troy uniform as he tallied a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Thomas and Wesley Person each added 10 points for Troy.
Â
Amin Torres came off the bench and paced Nicholls (2-7) with 16 points. Sam McBeath reeled in a team-high six rebounds.
Â
In the second half, Troy outscored Nicholls 22-12 in the paint and 9-4 on second-chance attempts. For the game, the Colonels had the edge in the paint, 32-24, and on the bench as they outscored the Trojans 33-14.
Â
Troy's men's team began during the 1950-51 season and it has an overall record of 1,000-808 (.553). Â In its 65 years, it made it to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and has been the NIT twice. The Trojans own 11 regular-season conference titles, the most recent in 2010.
Â
Troy will enjoy a nine-day break to enjoy the holidays. The Trojans will host Pike County Appreciation Night as they begin conference play on December 30, when Texas State visits Trojan Arena. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m., and will be a part of a doubleheader with the women's squad, which is slated to start at 5:15 p.m.
