AUBURN, Ala. – In the middle of a three-game road swing, the Troy soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss at Auburn on Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
"We got better today. This weekend was good for us for many reasons," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said following the loss. "We played two quality opponents that are well-coached and developed our game."
Bentley believes that despite recent results, this weekend will push the Trojans to raise their play as Troy wraps up non-conference play over the next two weeks.
"We will look back at this weekend as being the one that made us raise our standard of play," Bentley said.
After Troy fired two shots early in the first half, Auburn (2-2-1) took the lead in the 19th minute as Chelsea Gandy-Cromer's shot off her left foot inside the 18-yard box put the Tigers up 1-0.
The Tigers added to their lead just four minutes later as Troy's (2-4-0) clearance on a corner kick was blocked, Auburn's Casie Ramsier picked up the deflection in the right side of the box and netted the goal.
Auburn closed out the scoring in the 56th minute as Tori Ball scored on a deflected shot from Haley Gerken that was saved by Troy goalkeeper Caitlin Buono, but Ball collected the rebound to push the Tigers' lead to 3-0.
The Trojans were outshot 17-3 in the match. Sophomore forward Louise Cheng picked up a shot on goal in the 69th minute, while freshman midfielder Necee Jennings and senior forward Maddie Tieken posted one shot a piece in the loss.
Making her fifth straight start in goal, Buono finished the match with five saves, including four in the second half. Auburn goalkeeper Alyse Scott recorded one save in the match, as Troy was shutout for just the second time this season.
Troy completes a three-game road swing at Jacksonville State on Friday at 7 p.m. The Trojans return home next Sunday to face Murray State at 1 p.m. at the Troy Soccer Complex.
