Trojans Drop Double-OT Match at Jacksonville State 1-0

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Despite Troy outshooting Jacksonville State, the Trojans dropped their third straight road match, falling to the Gamecocks 1-0 in double overtime on Friday night at the JSU Soccer Field.

Jacksonville State's (3-2-1) Mackenzie Bellows capitalized on a Troy (2-5-0) foul and netted the game-winning goal off a free kick in the 103^rd minute of the second frame of extra time.

"We outplayed (Jacksonville State) today. I am so proud of our effort," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "We just could not finish. We had chance after chance and nothing went through. (Jacksonville State) worked hard, got a chance and finished."

Troy sophomore forward Louise Cheng fired seven shots off the bench in the loss as the Trojans fired 22 in the match to the Gamecock's 14. Senior forward Cecilia Thorngren also added five shots, one on goal, while sophomore defender Kirsten Rendall and senior midfielder Samantha Morgan chipped in three shots.

Six of Troy's 11 starters played the entire match in the loss. The Trojans had their chances in the first half, posting 11 shots, five on goal. Troy's back line supplied superb effort, holding the Gamecocks to just one shot in the first half.

Both teams began to push forward in the second half, as Jacksonville State outshot Troy 10-9, battling to a scoreless stalemate to force extra time.

Jacksonville State goalkeeper Taylor Hammond posted 10 saves, while Troy's Caitlin Buono recorded eight saves in a losing effort.

Despite Friday night's result, Bentley believes that the effect of a tough road loss will translate into the Trojans being ready for Sunday's home match against Murray State.

"The feeling we have right now will propel us into Sunday. The team is not happy and is ready to play again," Bentley said.

The Trojans return home to the Troy Soccer Complex for their first home match in two weeks. Sunday's match against Murray State will start at 1 p.m. Admission is free to all Troy soccer games.
