KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State's Maggie Gaughan scored a pair of goals as the Troy soccer team dropped its final non-conference match of the season 2-0 to the Owls at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on Sunday.
After Troy (4-6-0) took to the offensive during the early stages of the match, Gaughan put Kennesaw State (3-5-1) in the lead by dribbling through the Trojans' back line and slotting a shot past goalkeeper Caitlin Buono in the 18th minute. In the 70th minute, Gaughan added her second and final goal of the match by slipping a header into goal off a cross to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
"It was a great game between two good teams today," Troy head coach Chris Bentley said. "They got the better of us finishing their chances, but we know what we need to do to fix things and the team is excited to get back on the field."
The Trojans finished with just five shots in the match, two of which were on goal. The loss snapped Troy's two-match winning streak.
The Owls fired 12 shots in the match keeping Buono and Madison Winter busy as both split time in goal for the Trojans in the loss. Each keeper allowed one goal in the loss as Buono was hung with the loss, recording one save during the first half. Winters played the final 46:50, returning from an injury suffered at Stetson during the opening weekend of the year.
Five Trojans fired one shot a piece against Kennesaw State goalkeeper Olivia Sturdivant, who finished with two saves. Junior Paige McMillian and freshman Necee Jennings recorded a shot on a goal in the loss.
The Trojans return home to the Troy Soccer Complex on Sunday, Sept. 29 to open Sun Belt Conference play against Texas State at 1 p.m. Sunday's match will be the first-ever meeting between Troy and Texas State.
