Soccer Falls to Texas State to Open SBC Play

TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team dropped its first match in Sun Belt play as a pair of first-half goals by Texas State downed the Trojans 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.

"You've got to finish your chances, as a team and as a whole it wasn't our best effort," Troy head coach Chris Bentley. "We've got to compete for 90 minutes. I think we created chances, but we didn't finish."

Texas State's (4-5-2, 0-1-1) Ali Myers scored her first goal of the year in the 17^th minute with the match tied at 1-1 to put the Bobcats in front for good. The teams played 73 minutes of scoreless action to end the match after the early offensive outburst.

Troy (4-7-0, 0-1-0) senior Cecilia Thorngren added her fourth goal of the year to tie the match at 1-1 just 35 seconds after Texas State took an early lead to in the fourth minute. Thorngren's goal came off a pass from Maddie Tieken that was passed through the area finding the senior's right foot.

Sydney Curry put the Bobcats in front in the fourth minute, netting a shot from just inside the 18-yard box to give the Texas State the early 1-0 lead.

Thorgren's goal ended a five-match streak without a goal and moved the Floda, Sweden, native into a tie for eighth place in school history with 13 career goals. Thorngren finished with four shots in the match to lead the Trojans.

In the second half, both teams had chances on the offensive end, but could not convert. Troy fired five shots in the second half, but Texas State's Natalie Gardini made a pair of saves in the half to keep the Trojans off the scoreboard in the final frame.

Texas State outshot Troy 22-16 in the match and the Bobcats finished with 12 shots on goal to Troy's five. The Bobcats' Lynsey Curry posted a match-high five shots. Nine Trojans recorded at least one shot in the loss.

For the second straight match, Troy's Caitlin Buono and Madison Winter split time in goal. Buono was saddled for the loss allowing both goals in the first half, while Winter posted a clean sheet during 45 minutes of action in the second half.

Troy returns to action on Thursday at 3 p.m. and host Arkansas State at the Troy Soccer Complex. The Trojans wrap up play next weekend's action on the road at UALR on Sunday.
