TROY, Ala. – The Troy soccer team picked up a 3-1 win against Gardner-Webb to close out its home non-conference schedule on Friday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.
TheTrojans fired a season-high 37 shots and tied a season-high with 16 shots on goal as the win marked the 50th career win for Troy head coach Chris Bentley. Troy (4-5-0) also picked up its 100th win all-time and Bentley believes it's a credit to those who have played for the Trojans.
Â
"The girls that I have coached, it says more about them and less about me, " Bentley said after the win. "I'm blessed enough to coach a cool game. This group of girls is really pushing forward and developing. I'm very proud of that it's our 100th win as a program and what these girls have put towards that."Â Â
Â
Sophomore Kirsten Rendall netted her first career game-winning goal, while freshman Necee Jennings added two goals in the second half to ice the match.
Â
Rendall took advantage of a failed Gardner-Webb (2-5-1) clearance and rifled a shot into the net to put Troy in the lead just 18 minutes to the match. The sophomore defender finished with two shots in the match, including a near-miss that deflected off the top of the crossbar in the 58th minute, just missing her second goal of the day.
Â
Necee Jennings scored for the second straight match as the freshman midfielder took a nice through ball on a quick combination between sophomore Jasmine Fahrnbauer and senior Samantha Morgan in the midfield to record her third goal of the year.
Â
Jennings added her fourth goal of the year and extended Troy's to 3-0 in the 82nd minute, collecting a botched save from Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Amy Schmitt; slipping in her second goal of the match in the crease to seal the match.
Â
Freshman Abby Reynolds led Troy with six shots in the match, two of which were on goal. Jennings added five shots, three on a goal, while Fahrnbauer and Jane Latif added four shots a piece in the win. Fahrnbauer, Latif and Morgan all added an assist a piece in the victory.
Â
Troy goalkeeper Caitlin Buono picked up her second straight win in goal for the Trojans, playing all 90 minutes. Troy's backline held Gardner-Webb scoreless until the Runnin' Bulldogs netted their lone goal in the 84th minute as Brandi Arey scored her first goal of the year off an assist from Meagan Reynolds.
Â
Troy's 37 shots and 16 shots on goal in the match were the most a single-game since the Trojans' season-opener against Alabama State last season. Nine Trojans fired shots in the match, as eight of Troy's starters posted one shot against the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Â
The Trojans conclude non-conference play on the road at Kennesaw State on Sunday afternoon. Sunday's match against the Owls will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
