Game One Box Score l Game Two Box Score
MIAMI – The Troy softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday at FIU, losing to the Panthers 6-5 in the day's first game, before being shut out by FIU's Cor Jenkins in the nightcap, 3-0.
Troy (18-23, 6-7) led 5-3 heading into the top of the seventh, but three Troy errors led to a pair of FIU (26-20, 9-7) unearned runs scoring after Bree Rojas cut into the Trojans lead with a leadoff home run to start the frame.
In the second game of the day, Jenkins earned her 13th win of the season by throwing a complete-game two-hit shutout of the Trojans, allowing just five runners to reach base in the game.
The loss marked the first Sun Belt series loss for Troy in almost a month, dating back to March 17 at North Texas. The series wraps up tomorrow with game three set to start at 11 a.m. CDT at the FIU Softball Complex.
Game 1: FIU 6, Troy 5
Kacie McAllister broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh as the junior's second home run of the season fell over the center field wall to give Troy a 5-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brie Rojas started off the frame with a solo shot to left field off of Troy reliever Jaycee Affleldt to cut the Troy lead down to 5-4. The Panthers then loaded the bases taking advantage of a Troy error on a ground ball to extend the inning against Rachel Rigney who entered in to the circle for Troy looking to pick up her fourth save of the season.
With one out, Chandler Griffin looked to cut the tying-run down at the plate after fielding a ground ball, but after what appeared to be an out at the plate, the tying-run was called safe as it was ruled Troy catcher Hannah Renn's right foot was pulled off the plate
to the game at 5-5.
Three pitches later with the bases still loaded, the Trojans picked up the second out of the inning as Keelie Housley snagged a line drive running in from left field, but the freshman tried to double off a runner at second base for the final out of the inning, but her throw got past Troy second baseman Taylor Smartt allowing the go-ahead run from third to score to seal the 6-5 win for FIU.
Rigney picked up the loss in relief, allowing the go-ahead runs, no of which were earned. Michaela Hamilton was stuck with the no decision after tossing the first five innings, allowing three runs and seven hits. Affeldt tossed just one inning of relief, giving up one hit, the solo home run to Rojas to start off the bottom of the seventh.
Shelby Graves earned the win in relief for FIU, throwing the final 2.1 innings allowing three hits and two runs, all which came off the McAllister two-run home run in the top of the seventh.
After both pitchers pitched two scoreless innings, FIU's Amber Curry belted a leadoff home run to start the third on the first pitch of the at-bat from Troy starter Michaela Hamilton.
Hannah Renn jumped on a fastball off of FIU starter Mariah Dawson in the top of the third and belted a three-run blast to left field to give Troy's its first lead of the afternoon. With the homer, Renn moved into a tie for seventh in school history with former
Trojans Felicia Hammer and Rocky Paige with 16 career home runs. For the season, the senior has nine home runs which is tied for the sixth-most in a single season by a Troy player.
FIU tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, as Shelby Graves's RBI groundout and Rachel Slowik's RBI single two outs knotted things up.
At the plate, McAllister led the Trojans with two base hits, including a home run, single and a run scored. Ebony Wright finished 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and two stolen bases. Renn finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs coming off her home run in the top of the fifth.
Game 2: FIU 3, Troy 0
FIU picked up three runs quickly in the top of the first in part to a two base hits and a Troy throwing error. Shelby Graves' RBI single to center plated Amber Curry, who walked to start the inning, and an errant throwing on the Trojans' relay attempt at the plate allowed Bre Kaye to score all the way from first base after she singled two batters earlier off of Troy pitcher Rachel Rigney.
The freshman took the loss in game two, allowing just one earned run and five base hits, while picking up one strikeout and walking four. Rigney kept the Panthers off the scoreboard over the final five innings as FIU stranded eight runners on base.
Cor Jenkins shutout the Trojans in the nightcap, allowing just two base hits and striking out four in the victory. Troy's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the first on a Chandler Griffin single to left, but Kacie McAllister was cut down at the plate for the third out after reaching base on dropped fly ball in the infield. McAllister and Griffin picked up one hit a piece to record Troy's only two hits in the second game.
During her final six innings of work, Jenkins kept the Trojans off base in every inning except for the fourth and the sixth innings.
