NEW ORLEANS, La. – After a successful opening day, the Troy women's tennis team continued to play well at the Big Easy Classic hosted by the University of New Orleans on Saturday. Of the three women's singles finals that will be played on Sunday, Troy will be a part of two while also placing a team in the doubles semifinals.
In the women's second singles draw, Candela Munoz Giron defeated Fanny Benincasa of New Orleans in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the finals as the second seed. Munoz Giron will meet Marie Aubert of Nicholls State, the number one seed, in the finals on Sunday.
In the third women's singles draw, Troy will be represented in the finals by Anja Cosovic who won two matches on Saturday to advance. She first defeated Gisela Cairo Baza of Southern Illinois, 6-2, 6-3, before defeating fellow Trojan Samya El Hsissen in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0.
Cosovic will take on Diana Pirciu of McNeese State in the finals on Sunday.
In the women's double draw, the pair of Munoz Giron and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega advanced to the semifinals with an 8-5 win over their opponents from Nicholls State.
The only singles final not to feature a Trojan is the first singles draw where second-seeded Karoline Grymel was forced to retire from her semifinal match with an injury. The injury also forced Grymel and doubles partner Lyubov Dorofeeva to withdraw from the doubles draw. Grymel and Dorofeeva were the first seed in the draw.
In addition to fighting for individual titles, the Trojans are in the running for a team title as teams are being awarded two points for a main draw win and one point for a consolation draw win.
