Trojans Fall at No.38 Florida State to Open Season
1/15/2013 3:01:00 PM | Tennis (W)
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Troy women's tennis team opened its season with a tough match at No.38 Florida State on Tuesday as the Trojans fell, 6-1, to the nationally-ranked Seminoles.
Troy (0-1) put up some competitive scores on the day, especially in doubles competition where the Trojans nearly took the day's opening point. Troy won at third doubles by default, and the Trojans narrowly lost at first and second doubles.
The Trojans' All-Sun Belt pair of Lyubov Dorofeeva and Karoline Grymel fell to Florida State's top team, 8-4, at first doubles, just before Troy newcomers Anja Cosovic and Hannah Toro narrowly fell at second doubles, 8-6.
“Today was a golden opportunity that we let slip away,” Troy head coach Eric Hayes said. “Florida State is a legitimate Top 20 team.
“Out team didn't help the cause. By not sticking to the program over Christmas break, they were not ready.”
In singles competition, Florida State (1-0) sent out three nationally ranked players as the Seminoles took five of the six matches. Troy's lone win came at sixth singles, by default.
Toro put up a string showing at second singles against FSU's highest ranked player, No.48 Mia Vriens, nearly taking the first set before falling in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.
Troy also nearly took the first set at fourth singles where Cosovic fell to FSU's Leyla Erkon, 7-5, 6-2. The remainder of singles matches also finished with Florida State winning in straight sets.
The Trojans return to the courts this weekend as they travel to the Georgia Invitational. The tournament features individual play rather than duel matches. No.6 Georgia, No.58 Memphis and No.67 Kansas State will join Troy at the three-day event that begins on Friday.
