Trojans Off to Impressive Start in 2012

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Troy women's tennis team posted an outstanding 9-2 record as a team on Friday to open the Big Easy Classic hosted by the University of New Orleans. Troy's seven players all won at least one match on the day as singles semifinals and quarterfinals will take place on Saturday.
In the first singles draw, second-seeded Karoline Grymel, who received a bye, won her lone match on the day over Brionn Flowers of Xavier (LA), 6-0, 6-0. Also in the first draw, Lyubov Dorofeeva won a first round match before falling the quarterfinals.
Grymel will play in the semifinals at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
In the second singles draw, Candela Munoz-Giron finds herself in the semifinals after a three-set win over Natasha Tomishima of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. Also in the second draw, Olivia Durden won a first round match before falling in the quarterfinals.
The third singles draw features three Trojans that have all advanced to the quarterfinals which will begin on Saturday. Second-seeded Samya El Hsissen got a win over Abigail Plecki of Southern Illinois, 6-7, 7-6, 6-0 to advance to the quarters.
Rosaura Ramirez-Vega joins El Hsissen in the quarterfinals thanks to a 6-4, 6-3 win in her first match, but the story of the day was Anja Cosovic who won twice on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals.
Cosovic first got a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first round before defeating sixth-seeded Nicole DeLoach of Xavier (LA) in the second round, 6-0, 6-0.
The three Trojans in the quarterfinals of the third singles draw will all begin play at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
In doubles play, Cosovic and Durden won a first round match to join Grymel/Dorofeeva and Ramirez-Vega/Munoz Giron, who each received byes, in the second round.
A team champion will be crowned at the Big Easy Classic with two points begin awarded for each main draw win and one point being awarded for each consolation win. Main draw byes were worth one point.
