TROY, Ala.-- The Troy University women's tennis team continue to win as their win streak has increased to five straight wins. The Trojans dropped conference rival Arkansas State in a four hour match, Friday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
In doubles play, the Trojans came out strong as Olfa Dhaoui and Candela Munoz dominated Tamara Slijepcevic and Jess Heeps-Eriksen at number three doubles, 8-6. Samya El Hsissen and Gabriella Veiga struggled at number two doubles, which resulted in a victory for ASU's Jamie Nowland and Ceara Howey.
With the doubles point on the line, Arkansas State came out strong, leading troy 5-0. However, the number one team of Karoline Grymel and Lybov Dorofeeva fought back against what seemed to be impossible odds, and defeated Mariana Rong and Ioana Teu 9-7.
The Trojans moved into singles play with what seemed to be timidity, with the exception of number three slot of Dhaoui. Dhaoui was dominant as she defeated ASU's Nowland 6-1, 6-1. With a 2-0 lead, Troy retired number six singles, Veiga, due to injuries, giving ASU their first point of the match.
Although the Trojans were leading, they were still down at least a set on the remaining courts. Number five singles for ASU Teu, defeated El Hsissen in a hard fought match 6-1, 6-1. Troy's Dorofeeva struggled at the number two slot against Slijepcevic, which resulted in a 6-1, 6-4 victory for Arkansas State.
With the match on the line, the Trojans fought hard for the next two points needed to win the match. Munoz- Giron came back from a set loss to win the overall point for the Trojans, defeating ASU's Milosevska 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number four singles.
The match was tied 3-3 with number one singles, Grymel, still on the court. Although down a set, and then 1-4 in the next, she continued to work hard, which resulted in a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory for the Trojans.
Coach Hayes remarked after the match was completed, “Good win today. We were getting our heads handed to us in singles, but refused to quit. This team showed tremendous heart today. I'm proud of them!”
