UTM Final Results
MARTIN, Tenn. – Only five points separated the top two teams as Missouri Valley College edged Tennessee-Martin to win the men's team title in Saturday's final round at the UT-Martin Rodeo.
In last year's rodeo, both the men's and women's team claimed top honors. However, this year's contest made for a different outcome.
Nelson Wyatt and Lane Taylor highlighted the weekend for the Trojan Spurs in the team roping event. The duo combined for a point total of 100, good enough for third and also finished third in the average with a time of 15.5. Missouri Valley's Cody Metsker and Hunter Lewis won the event with a 12.4 second average.
Wyatt also competed in steer wrestling, but did not place in the event after totaling 40 points and tying for sixth.
Lanie Culligan was the only Trojan Spur to make the short-go for the women's team, and struggled to come away with any positive results. Her 17.2 second average in goat tying was four seconds off the winning time by Missouri Valley's Shelby Jacobson, which did not give her a podium finish.
With Culligan being the only member to represent the women's team in the final round on Saturday, the women's team did not accumulate any points.
The 240 total team points put up by Wyatt and Taylor gave the men's team a fourth place finish, just 30 points behind third place East Mississippi Community College.
The road to the College National Finals doesn't get any easier for Troy, as they will travel next Thursday, April 19, to Senatobia, Miss. to compete in the first of two rodeos hosted by Northwest Mississippi Community College.
