TROY, Ala. – On the heels of its second team championship on the campus of West Alabama two weeks ago, the Troy women's rodeo team will look for its fourth straight finish of second or better this weekend at the Southern Arkansas University Rodeo.
The women's team has won two events out of three thus far, and narrowly missed a team title at Murray State by just 75 points to Southern Arkansas. The men's team began the year with a tenth place finish at Missouri Valley, but rebounded at Murray State with a fifth place finish before dropping back to tenth at the past event in Livingston.
The women head into Thursday's event with a 300-point advantage over the Muleriders from Southern Arkansas, while the men cling to a ninth place standing in the Ozark Region with 420 points.
Troy's Albert McBride sits tenth in the steer wrestling standings with 80 points, while Arkansas-Monticello's Eric Manos leads the event by 180 points.
The duo of Troy's Zack Mabry and Tennessee-Martin's Ben Walker go into Thursday in second in team roping with 285 points to their name. Skyhawks John Alley and Clark Adcock lead the event with 540 points.
Kelsey Kennemer has paced the field in the breakaway roping event thus far and enters the rodeo with a 3.3 point advantage over Kayla Lummus of East Mississippi Community College. Anna Niewoehner has also shown some success in the event and holds a seventh place standing with 120 points, while Kassandra Smith sits tied for 12th with 50 points.
Goat tying has been the main event for Smith as she currently holds a second place standing with 250 points just 45 behind Southern Arkansas' Loni Pearce. Teammate Kesia Smith has also shared success in the event and heads into the weekend holding a fourth place standing with 175 points. Lanie Culligan enters in seventh with 115 points, while Kennemer sits 11th with 60.
The event in Magnolia, Ark. will be the last for the Trojan Spurs before preparations begin to host the annual Trojan Stampede on Nov. 15-17, also the weekend of Troy's homecoming.
Action will begin Thursday night and will conclude on Saturday night with the short-go final events.
