TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team opened action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championship on Friday, with many Trojans seeing success, including Karoline Grymel, who will play in the singles and doubles round of 16 on Saturday.
The winner of the singles main draw and the doubles main draw earns an automatic berth into the next month's USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York.
Grymel and doubles partner Lyubov Dorofeeva will be the first in action for the Trojans on Saturday when they take on Larina and Nedorostova of Northwestern State in the round of 16 of the doubles main draw.
Grymel and Dorofeeva defeated Faught and Lowther of UAB in the first round of the doubles draw, 8-6, while the pair from Northwestern State defeated a duo from Tulane.
The winner of Saturday mornings' match will advance to the doubles draw quarterfinal, which will also take place on Saturday.
Grymel will also take part in the singles main draw round of 16 after a pair of wins on Friday. The senior defeated Lauren Caballero of Samford in the first round, 6-3, 7-6 (5), and Hila Elster of Tulane in the second round, 7-5, 6-2.
Anja Cosovic also picked up a win in the first round of the singles main draw, defeating Caroline Faught of UAB, 6-1, 6-3. However, Cosovic fell in the second round to the tournament's eighth seed, Maya Jansen of Alabama.
Rosaura Ramirez-Vega will play in the semifinals of the B singles draw after winning in the quarterfinals over Sarah Gail Niebur of Samford, 6-4, 6-2.
Samya El Hsissen will be in the B singles consolation semifinal after a quarterfinal win over Allie Robbins of Ole Miss, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
