Women's Rodeo Grabs Second Win of Season

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Just three events into the 2012 fall season, the Troy women's rodeo team picked up its second team championship of the year on Saturday at the UWA Showdown.
The team captured its second title in one month thanks to a stellar performance of 450 total points, 225 ahead of second place Arkansas-Monticello.
Two Trojans advanced to the short-go in breakaway roping, with Kelsey Kennemer coming away as the event leader among the three Trojans who competed. Kennemer placed fourth in the average with a time of 8.1 seconds, and finished third overall with 105 points. Anna Niewoehner finished third in the average with a time of 8 seconds, and placed fourth overall with 90 points. Lanie Culligan did not advance to the short-go and finished tied for fifth with 40 points.
Goat tying also welcomed three Trojans to the short-go, with Kesia Smith leading the way overall. Smith scored times of 9.6 and 9.1 seconds for an average of 18.7 to finish first in the category, and placed first overall in the event with 175 total points. Kennemer came away with a fourth place overall finish with 60 points, and placed fourth in the average with a time of 20.2 seconds. Culligan also competed and finished tied for sixth with 20 points with an average of 21.6 seconds.
Just one Trojan Spur appeared in the short-go of barrel racing, as Kennemer came away with an eighth place finish with an average of 35.6 seconds.
Zach Mabry and Nelson Wyatt were responsible for the 120 points put up by the men's team to give them a finish of tenth.
Wyatt recorded times of 7.6 and 5.5 seconds in the steer wrestling event for an average of 13.1 to place third in the average and fourth overall with 55 points.
Mabry, paired with Tennessee-Martin's Ben Walker, placed fifth overall in team roping with 65 points with an average time of 25 seconds.
The Trojan Spurs will enjoy a two-week break before returning to the arena October 25-27 to take part in the Southern Arkansas University Rodeo in Magnolia, Ark.
