TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team had a strong showing at the Duckworh Fall Classic on Friday. The Trojans are set up for a successful Saturday at the 18-team tournament hosted by Clemson.
The Trojans will play a championship match right out of the gate on Saturday as Candela Munoz Giron and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega will play in the finals of third flight in doubles play. The Troy duo defeated a team from Mercer in the first round on Friday, 8-6, before winning a semifinal over a team from Brenau, 9-7.
Munoz Giron and Ramirez-Vega will take on a pair from USC-Upstate for the flight championship at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Three of the seven Trojans competing in singles action won their first round matches on Friday to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Karoline Grymel, just days after participating in the qualifying of the USTA Tennis Classic of Troy, won her first round match over Alex Moreno of Furman, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the first flight semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Also advancing to the semifinals was Anja Cosovic in the sixth flight as she defeated Alexandra Walters of Charleston Southern, 6-3, 6-0. Cosovic's semifinal will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Saurday.
Olivia Brooke Durden was the third Trojan to advance as she posted a first round win over Katie Polk of Chattanooga, 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the seventh flight semifinals.
Singles finals are set to be played on Sunday.
