TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team saw its first action at home on Saturday, and despite a strong effort, fell to Auburn, 5-2, at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Karoline Grymel and Lyubov Dorofeeva were the standouts for the Trojans (0-4) on the day as the two combined for a doubles win and each took their singles match.
The doubles point was hotly contested as Grymel and Dorofeeva put the Trojans in a good position with a great win in the first spot in the lineup. The two defeated the No.6 doubles team in the Southern region in Auburn's Jen Pfiefler and Jacqueline Kasler, 8-2.
That match was the second of the doubles matches to finish as Troy's Olfa Dhaoui and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega had already fallen at number two doubles, 8-3.
Samya El Hsissen and Candela Munoz Giron were still on the court at number three doubles when Grymel and Dorofeeva won, giving the Trojans a chance to take their first doubles point of the season. However, the two freshmen were unable to break through as Auburn (1-0) took the doubles points with an 8-4 victory.
Troy fell into a quick 2-0 hole as singles action started when Auburn's Pfiefler, the No.8 player in the Southern region, defeated Dhaoui at number two singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Troy was in a 3-0 hole with Munoz Giron fell at number four singles, but once again, Grymel and Dorofeeva kept the Trojans in it with phenomenal performances.
Grymel, playing in the number one singles spot for a fourth straight match, took out Auburn's Emily Flickinger, 6-3, 6-2 to give Troy its first point and put the score at 3-1.
Dorofeeva got her victory at the number three spot in the lineup by knocking off Auburn's Paulina Schippers, 6-2, 6-1. Unfortunately, the win came after the Tigers had already clinched the match with a win at number five singles.
Kasler defeated Ramirez-Vega in that fifth spot, 6-1, 6-4, to give Auburn a win in its season-opener.
El Hsissen competed in the number six spot for Troy but fell as well.
The Trojans return to the court on Sunday when they host Florida A&M at 1:00 p.m. The match will be held at the Lunsford Tennis Complex and admission is free.
