TROY shuts out in-state rival South Alabama in final home match of 2011

TROY, Ala. (TroyTrojans.com) - The Troy University women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day by sweeping the University of South Alabama Jaguars 7-0 Wednesday evening at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.

The Trojans honored the career of Leonie Guijt before the match, presenting her with flowers and a momento from her career.

The Trojans got off to a great start in doubles at number three doubles when Olfa Dhaoui and Gabriella Veiga defeated South Alabama's Birdgette Gale and Anna Davidson 8-0 victory. The pressure switched back to the Trojans and the number one doubles team of Leonie Guijt and Karoline Grymel to win their match, after the number three team from Troy, Lyubov Dorafeeva and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega lost 9-7.

Guijt and Grymel jumped to an early 6-3 lead before losing the next three points, evening the match at 6-all. But the Trojans quickly rebounded taking the next two points to win the match, and give TROY the doubles point, 8-6.

In singles play the Trojans won all but one set.

Gabriella Veiga won both sets without giving up a point, winning her match 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles. Dorofeeva (number four) and Ramirez-Vega (number five) also made quick work of their matches winning 6-0, 6-1 clinching the victory for TROY.

It was fitting that the last match of the evening was Guijt's. All eyes were on her as she won in straight sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. The Trojans celebrated the victory by pouring the ice cooler on Guijt ending a memorable Senior Day for the Netherlands native.

The Trojans next match will be April 9 in Birmingham against the UAB Blazers.
