Troy Defeats Southern Miss on Senior Day

TROY, Ala. – Troy women's tennis earned its first 3-0 start to Sun Belt play since 2019 following its 4-1 defeat of Southern Miss on Saturday. Additionally, the Trojans extended its win streak to five matches while moving to 9-6 on the season.
Troy honored seniors Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis before beginning play as part of Senior Day – both players are four-year members of the team. Avdeeva and Guirguis returned the favor by defeating Southern Miss's Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo, 6-2 to open doubles. Veena Nazar and Alexia Zarate clinched the doubles point for the Trojans by topping Mia Hisashi-Morrissey and Kamornwan Kornsila in a thriller, 7-5.
Reining conference Player of the Week Maria Guirguis moved to 12-0 on the season from the No.1 position as she defeated Angelina Blinova in straight sets, 6-3. Fellow senior Valeriia Avdeeva was next as she topped Sakura Sudo, 6-4, 6-3.
With the score 3-1 favoring the Trojans, the next singles victory would end the day for the Golden Eagles. Veena Nazar closed the door on Southern Miss with her victory over Manuella Persson. After taking set one 6-2, Nazar overpowered Persson in set two via a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4).
Troy will be back in action tomorrow as they welcome No. 69 South Alabama into the Lunsford Tennis Complex. Doubles play is set at begin at 2 p.m.
