NEW ORLEANS, La. – Following two wins at the No. 1 position, Maria Guirguis was named Sun Belt Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.
Guirguis anchored two Sun Belt wins for Troy, as the Trojans defeated Texas State and Georgia State to secure their first 2-0 start in conference play since the 2019 season.
"I am very proud of Maria and her performance throughout the season," head coach Rawia Elsisi said. "She is a tough competitor and fighter on the court, and this is a well-deserved honor for the weekend she had."
On Friday, the Alexandria, Egypt, native defeated Emily Niers of Texas State, 6-2, 7-5. On Sunday, with Troy trailing on all four singles courts, Guirguis remained calm, rallying from a 1-5 first-set deficit to defeat Maria Paredes of Georgia State in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
Guirguis has spent the entire season on Court 1 and is undefeated at 11-0. Eight of her wins have come in straight sets, while she led in two other matches that went unfinished.
Guirguis' 19-3 overall record this season improves her career mark to 78-37.
Troy returns to action with a pair of Sun Belt matches at home on Saturday and Sunday against Southern Miss and No. 69 South Alabama, respectively.
