Trojans Fall to Auburn on Courts

AUBURN, Ala. - The Troy University women's tennis team faced their third Southeastern Conference foe this season, falling to Auburn University 6-1 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Saturday evening.
Troy (5-11) nearly took the doubles point from Auburn (4-11), but the Tigers used victories at number two and three to offset the victory by Troy's number one team. The Trojans' Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt defeated Auburn's Olivia Bennett and Paulina Schippers, 8-7 (7-5), recording the only doubles victory for the Trojans on the day.
Auburn won the first match of the day in doubles action when they team of Jacqueline Kasler and Plamena Kurteva defeated the Trojans' team of Lyubov Dorafeeva and Gabrielle Veiga at number two, 8-2. The point was clinched when the Trojans' team of Olfa Dhaoui and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega fell to Auburn's Caroline Thornton and Taylor Schreimann, 8-6, giving Auburn an overall 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, Jacqueline Kasler defeated Troy's Rosaura Ramirez-Vega 6-2, 6-1 at number five to give the Tigers a 2-0 overall lead in the match; moments before Plamena Kurteva defeated the Trojans' Lyubov Dorafeeva 6-4, 6-3 to give Auburn an overall 3-0 lead, and leaving them one point from clinching the overall match.
Troy's Karoline Grymel put the celebration on hold momentarily as she captured a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory at number one singles over Auburn's Paulina Schippers; trimming the Auburn lead to 3-1. However, Auburn clinched the match whenm Caroline Thornton claimed a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) victory over Olfa Dhaoui at number two.
With the match clinched, two matches were still being played, with Olivia Bennett of Auburn claiming a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Leonie Guijt at number three; while Taylor Schreimann defeated the Trojans' Gabriella Veiga 7-5, 6-4 to close the match at number six.
The Trojans return to action next Sunday on the road against ULM.
