Troy Falls Short of First, SAU Overcomes Adversity

Magnolia, Ark. – The Troy Rodeo team traveled to Southern Arkansas University this past weekend and fell short of first as a group, but the biggest news of the weekend had nothing to do with results.
The rodeo started off with an unusual twist in Magnolia, and SAU athletes are having a hard time dealing with the events that took place. Sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, five American quarter horses, a horse trailer and other equipment were stolen from the Mulerider stables on the campus of SAU. The trailer was recovered Thursday night, but the horses valued at $10,000 each remain to be found. Even though the events don't directly affect Troy's rodeo team, head coach Josh Simmons is still disgusted with the news.
“It's a shame that somebody wants to steal something from a college kid trying to better themselves. These horses mean so much to the athletes and they're just as much as a part to their success as anything. Even though I'm a coach at another school, to have that kind of set back, I found myself rooting for those specific athletes.”
Even with the stolen horses and equipment, Southern Arkansas overcame adversity and managed to win both the men's and women's team championships. The men's team from Troy came in fifth place and the women finished the weekend in third. Whitney Hazouri claimed another individual victory, this time in Breakaway Roping.
“Whitney won Breakaway Roping straight through, which is a pretty big feat for an athlete. She roped the two fastest calves of the weekend,” said Simmons.
Troy also had a cowgirl gain points in Barrel Racing. “Brittney Drawdy, the women's team captain, had a great run in Barrel Racing. Now she's in the top four in the region and it's well deserved,” said Simmons.
On the men's side, Freshman Nelson Wyatt shared top honors in Steer Wrestling. “Nelson stepped it up; he was the only member of the men's team to make it back to the short go. He ended up splitting first and second in the average,” said Simmons.
This past weekend's rodeo was the last road event of the fall season. Troy will host the annual Trojan Stampede beginning next Thursday, Nov. 17, and continue through Saturday, Nov. 19.
