Auburn, Ala. - The Trojan (0-6, 0-0) women's basketball team fell to their in-state rival Auburn (5-1, 0-0) Wednesday night 74-47. The loss marks a 14 straight defeat to the Tigers for the Trojans.
“Overall I think their size and athleticism got to us in the second half,” said head coach Michael Murphy. “We got a little run down and because of our injuries we really had nowhere to go.”
The already injury plagued Trojan squad struggled against a physical and over-sized Tiger team. Freshman Rosie Hynes got her third straight start as she continues to fill in for the injured Sophie Kleeman. Hynes came out strong leading her team from the guard position. She lead her team in total assists in the contest as she totaled four.
The Trojans had to battle for each shot against the aggressive Tigers. Auburn ended the contest with 13 total blocks. The Trojans had only given up 10 blocks in all previous five games put together.
Despite still struggling in giving up points on turnovers, the Trojans utilized many Tiger turnovers as well. Troy recorded 17 points on turnovers to Auburns 20.
Senior DeAngela Sword had another successful evening as she broke double digits in points for the sixth consecutive contest. Sword has led the Trojans in scoring in four of the past six games.
“I have just been trying to play with the offense and take what is given to me,” said Sword.
The Trojans were able to utilize their free-throw opportunities as they shot 11-17 from the free-throw line compared to Auburn who only shot 5-13.
“Tonight we went up against a very disciplined, determined and aggressive team,” said Murphy.
“We knew they would be. They are an extremely well coached. They play really hard, which is evident by how hard they go to the offensive rebounds. We have a lot of respect their program. I thought my girls competed. I thought that under the circumstances, considering all of our injuries we did as well as we could do. We never gave up, we never gave in and we continued to fight until the final buzzard. I'm really proud of them. I feel that we learned a lot of lessons tonight that can help us move forward.”
Troy will wrap up a four game road campaign on Sunday when they travel to Jacksonville State University to take on the Gamecocks. Tipoff is set for 6 pm.
