Troy Falls in Home Opener

The Trojan women's basketball team fell to Winthrop 80-66 but secure a strong foundation for the rest of the season.

Troy, Ala. – The Troy (0-1) women's basketball team fell to the Winthrop Eagles (1-0) 80-66 in the Trojans home opener on Sunday. Despite the disappointing start to the 2011-12 season the Trojans were able to establish a strong foundation to build on.
The Trojans got off to a strong start in the match gaining a seven point lead on the Eagles with the help of the Trojans efficiency behind the ark. In the first three minutes Ieva Nagy would drain two straight three pointers quickly followed by a Tenia Manuel three point shot.
The Trojans would go onto give up the lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half but would not be able to recover it. However the Trojans were able to keep the matchup within striking distance with the help of exceptional individual scoring performances. Sarah McAppion, Ieva Nagy and DeAngela Sword all broke into double digits in scoring in the match.
McAppion led the Trojans in scoring with 19 total points, shooting 3-7 behind the line and 6-14 in the field. McAppion would also go on to hit 4-4 on free throws as the Trojans secured 81% making 9-18 of their free throws as a team.
Nagy recorded 14 total points shooting 3-7 behind the line and 5-14 in the field. Sword totaled 10 points shooting 5-9 behind the line.
However the Trojans struggled in turnovers as they gave up the ball 17 times. Winthrop was able to capitalize by scoring 24 points on the Trojan turnovers.
“I'm disappointed with a loss but really happy with our effort,” said head coach Michael Murphy. “I thought we were far more organized for our first game. I was really pleased with our effort but I think we have a lot to work with. We still have a lot to work on but I'm happy with our balance.”
The Trojans now prepare for their first road match when they Travel to Greenville, South Carolina to take on Furman University on Thursday. Tipoff is set for 4:00 pm.
