CLEMSON, S.C. – The Troy University women's tennis opens the 2011 regular season on the road against nationally-ranked Clemson Friday afternoon. The match is slated to start at 2 pm (EST).
The Trojans have four players back from last season, including their top two players in singles and doubles. Sophomore Karoline Grymel (Hamburg, Germany) returns for her second season in the top spot in singles and doubles for the Trojans; while her doubles teammate Leonie Guijt (Rijnsburg, Netherlands) also returns for her senior season. Guijt will play near the top in singles, and will also be Grymel's partner at number one doubles throughout the year.
Also returning for Troy this season is Rosaura Ramirez-Vega (Seville, Spain) who played at number six last season, while Gabriella Veiga (Londrina, Brazil) also returns as a doubles specialist and will also play in singles competition for the Trojans.
The Trojans also welcome in Olfa Dhaoui (Nabeul, Tunisia), Olivia Battye (Liverpool, England) and Lyubov Dorofeeva (Moscow, Russia) in for the 2011 season as true freshman. Redshirt freshman Kelly Irving (Knoxville, Tenn.) will not participate in this week's match after undergoing offseason surgery, but will be ready for the season in February.
Clemson will open the season ranked 11th in the nation, after going 24-6 in 2010, and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year.
Clemson returns five key players from last season's run, including All-ACC selections Keri Wong and Josipa Bek. Bek enters the season ranked 12th in the nation in singles, while Wong checks in at #48 overall. As a doubles team, the pair had arguably the best fall in school history, and have ascended to #2 in the nation.
Live stats will be provided by Clemson University for the match on Friday afternoon.
