CLEMSON, S.C. – The 11th-ranked Clemson University Tigers proved too much for the Troy University women's tennis team, claiming a 7-0 victory Saturday afternoon.
Clemson (1-0) used a sweep of doubles led by the nation's second-ranked team of Jospia Bek and Keri Wong, as they defeated Troy's number one team of Karoline Grymel (Hamburg, Germany) and Leonie Guijt (Rijnsburg, Netherlands) 8-2. The point was won for Clemson when the number three team of Nelly Ciolkowski and Kiara Vyskocilova defeated the Troy team of Olivia Battye (Liverpool, England) and Lyubov Dorofeeva (Moscow, Russia), 8-1.
Meanwhile, after Clemson took a 1-0 match lead, the number two team of Olfa Dhaoui (Nabeul, Tunisia) and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega (Seville, Spain) battled Clemson's Maria Belaya and Laurianne Henry, before falling 8-6 in the match.
In singles play, Dhaoui had to retire in the second set after injuring her ankle and not being to continue as she trailed 6-0, 4-0 to 48th-ranked Wong. Meanwhile, Bek – ranked 11th overall in the nation in singles play – defeated Grymel at number one 6-1, 6-4 to give Clemson a 3-0 lead.
With the Tigers needing just one more match to clinch the overall match and start the year out with a victory, they turned to Vyskocilova at number three as she defeated the Trojans' Guijt 6-2, 6-3 to give Clemson the 4-0 lead and match victory.
With the match all ready decided, Clemson won the final three matches in straight sets; also winning an extra match played in a pro set on the afternoon.
The Trojans are off until January 29 when they hit the road to face UT-Martin.
