TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team avoided the weekend sweep as they split a Sunday doubleheader with Louisiana-Lafayette at the Trojan Softball Complex. The Trojans (24-25, 10-11) fell in game one 5-0 before taking game two from the Cajuns (33-15, 14-4) by a score of 5-4.
Kala Moore and Rocky Paige each had a combined three hits in their final home games for the Trojans, but Nikki Hollett stole the show as she hit two home runs and had 4 RBI in game two.
GAME ONE
The Trojans and Cajuns would each get six hits in game one, but the Trojans would walk seven batters and the Ragin' Cajuns would take game one 5-0.
Sally Ward (3-5) got the start in the circle for the Trojans and gave up three runs, two earned with two strikeouts and five walks in 4.0 innings of work. Haley Hutchins came on in relief and threw 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Kala Moore and Rocky Paige each posted two hits for the Trojans.
The Cajuns would get ahead early with three runs in the first inning. The Cajuns would send eight batters to the plate as Ward would give up just two hits, but three walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball would contribute to Louisiana-Lafayette's three run first inning.
Louisiana-Lafayette would add another in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-0. A single and a one-out double would put two runners in scoring position for the Cajuns. A walk would load the bases and strikeout would give the Trojans their second out of the inning.
A single by Nerissa Murphy would plate Courtney Trahan from third, but Marcy Sartain would throw out Gabriele Bridges who tried to scored from second to prevent any further damage.
Louisiana-Lafayette would add another in the seventh when Lana Bowers hit her seventh home run of the season over the left field fence.
Brittany Cuevas (16-6) went the distance for the Cajuns, picking up her sixth shutout on the season, giving up six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Lana Bowers lead the Ragin' Cajuns at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
GAME TWO
The Trojans would use seven hits, including two home runs from Nikki Hollett to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette 5-4 in game two.
Ashlyn Williams (18-18) went the distance for the Trojans for the 27th time this season. She gave up four runs, three earned on ten hits. Seven of the hits came in the Cajuns two scoring innings.
Hollett went 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and hit both home runs onto the left field patio. Sarah Harris also had two hits and Kala Moore extended her hitting streak to 14 games in her final home game.
Troy would take their first lead of the weekend when they plated a single run in the second inning. Rocky Paige got things started with a leadoff infield single. She moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a single by Sarah Harris. Hayden Gann would deliver with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Paige and give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
Louisiana-Lafayette take the lead in the third. The Cajuns would get four straight singles with no outs to plate three runs and take a 3-1 lead after two and a half innings.
Troy would respond in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own. Marcy Sartain reached on an error to leadoff the inning and went to second when Kala Moore extended her hitting streak to 14 games with an infield single. Both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out.
Nikki Hollett then delivered with her fifth home run of the season, a three run shot that landed on the patio in left field, giving the Trojans a 4-3 lead.
Louisiana-Lafayette would tie things up with a single score in the fifth. Three straight singles to start the inning loaded the bases with no outs. After a fly out to right retired the first Cajun of the inning, a fielder's choice scored the tying run to make things 4-4.
Hollett would strike again in the fifth. For her second straight at bat, the Melbourne, Australia hit a shot to the left field patio, this time of the solo variety that gave the Trojans a 5-4 lead after five innings.
The Cajuns would threaten in the seventh inning, loading the bases with one out, but Williams would pitch out of any trouble and give the Trojans their first win over the Cajuns since April 21, 2007.
Donna Bourgeois (17-9) went the distance for Louisiana-Lafayette, giving up five runs, four earned on seven hits with six strikeouts.
