TROY, Ala. - The Troy Trojans softball team fell to in-state rival South Alabama in a pitcher's duel at home on Wednesday, 1-0. The game marked the Trojans first ever "Strike Out Cancer" game and the largest crowd of the season was on hand.
Ashlyn Williams brought her best stuff to the Trojan Softball Complex on Wednesday night, but unfortunately the Trojans offense stranded six base runners and couldn't scratch across a run. Williams held the Jaguars without a hit until a leadoff single in the seventh inning, with 13 strikeouts through six innings.
That leadoff single in the seventh ended up costing the Trojans (17-14, 5-2) the first run of the game. After a passed ball moved the runner to second base, Williams struck out her 14th batter of the game, but Haley Hopkins followed with a single to centerfield to plate the first run of the game and give South Alabama (12-11, 1-0) a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Williams (13-10) was tagged with the loss despite giving up no earned runs and surrendering just two hits while striking out 14 and walking one.
The Trojans had five different batters with one hit. The Trojans left six runners on base while the Jaguars stranded only one.
Beth Pilgrim (9-5) of USA was equally dominate. The senior gave up just three hits and no runs through the sixth inning.
The Trojans would come to life in the seventh inning though. After the leadoff batter struck out, Nikki Hollett and Belinda White delivered with back-to-back singles, placing runners on first and second with one out.
With the tying run in scoring position, the Trojans were unable to capitalize as the next two batters struck out and flew out to right field.
Pilgrim's final line read no runs, on five hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.
The Trojans will continue Sun Belt play when they travel to Monroe, La. to take on the ULM Warhawks. A doubleheader is scheduled on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. with a single game scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
