Trojans Split Two at ULM

MONROE, La. - The Troy Trojans softball team split a doubleheader at ULM on Saturday. Troy took game one 4-0 in nine innings, while ULM took the second contest, 4-1. The Trojans and ULM will play the deciding game three tomorrow at the ULM Softball Complex at 1:00 p.m.
GAME ONE
For the second straight game, the Trojans were lock into a pitcher's duel as Ashlyn Williams and Kandace Causey were mixing up batters all day. The Trojans were able to break through in the ninth inning with four runs to take the opening game, 4-0.
Williams (14-10) threw her fourth shutout and 19th complete game, giving up five hits and 12 strikeouts. Those 12 K's give her 245 on the year, placing Williams first in the nation. Williams held Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year Brianna Love to 0-for-4 with four K's.
The Trojans got there first hit on the board in the seventh when Nikki Hollett led off with a single through the left side. A sacrifice bunt by Rocky Paige moved the pinch running Ashley Adkins to second with one out.
After a ground out moved her third base and walk put two on with two outs, the Trojans couldn't capitalize and a pop up to second base ended the inning, sending the game into the bottom of the seventh with no score.
The Trojans would retire ULM in short order in the bottom of the seventh, taking the Trojans into their third extra inning game of the season.
Both teams would go quietly in the eighth, but the Trojans would mount a two-out rally in the ninth. Paige got things started with a two-out double. After Hayden Gann and Courtney Cherry drew walks to load the bases, an error by ULM's third baseman allowed Troy to score the first run of the game.
With the bases still loaded, Marcy Sartain delivered a single through the left side to plate another run, and leaving the bases loaded with two outs. The bottom of the Trojans lineup continued to produce as number nine hitter Sarah Shields punched a two RBI single into center field to give the Trojans a four run ninth inning.
The Warhawks would get one hit in the ninth, but were unable to score, ending game one with a final of 4-0.
Causey (3-3) gave up four runs on four hits and struck out seven Trojans for ULM.
GAME TWO
ULM would even up the series in game two with a 4-1 victory.
Troy would get on the board first with a single run in the first inning. After Kala Moore reached on an error to lead off the game, a one-out single by Paige put runners on the corners. A perfectly executed double steal with two outs plated the Trojans run, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
ULM would get their first runs of the day with a three spot in the fourth inning. Williams entered the inning with no hits allowed in the game, but five singles and one Trojan error allowed the Warhawks to plate four runs, three of them earned.
Unfortunately that was way the game would finish, with ULM on top of Troy 4-1.
Williams (14-11) threw 4.0 innings and gave up four runs, three earned on five hits with two strikeouts.
Paige and Hayden Gann each had one hits for the Trojans.
The Trojans and Warhawks will close out their series with a single tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at the ULM Softball Complex.
