ATLANTA – The Troy University women's basketball team heads into the Georgia State Invitational looking for a spark to turn around the season, and they are hoping that a few days off for Christmas is enough to rejuvenate them heading into the conference schedule.
The Trojans last played on December 22, their third game in five days, on the road against American in Washington, DC.
This week, the Trojans (2-10, 0-1 Sun Belt) head to Atlanta for the GSU Invitational to face Hampton (6-4) in the first game of the tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The game is the second of the day at the GSU Sports Arena with tip set for 4 pm (EST). The game will feature the fifth opponent this season that participated in the 2009-10 postseason, as the Pirates won the MEAC before being bounced out of the NCAA Tournament in the first round by Duke.
The game can be heard on WTBF-94.7 FM, beginning with the pregame at 3:45 pm (EST); while the two games the Trojans play in Atlanta featured on the station.
The Trojans are still without three of their top players, one of which is out for the season in Sarah McAppion (Canberra, Australia/AIS). Meanwhile, Cortney Hawkins (Birmingham, Ala./Ramsay HS) is going through physical therapy for her offseason surgery in hopes of returning for the conference schedule, and the Trojans are awaiting word on junior Kirsten Smith (Pensacola, Fla./Washington HS) who has been out since the opener with a concussion.
In their absence, senior Donette McNair (New London, Conn./New London HS) has picked up where she left off last season. The senior leads the team in scoring and rebounding, as well as leading the Sun Belt Conference in rebounding this season – a feat she has accomplished for the last three weeks. The senior is averaging 13.8 points and 9.7 rebounds. She has recorded 880 points all-time, good for 10th all-time at the Division I level at the institution; as well as standing third all-time in rebounding at 634 total rebounds.
Meanwhile, junior DeAngela Sword (Montgomery, Ala./Pensacola JC) is second on the team in scoring, after being inserted into the starting lineup with the absence of Smith. The junior is averaging 13.2 points per game, and is among the best in the conference in three-point field goal percentage at 35.3 percent on the season.
The Trojans have also turned to junior Tenia Manuel (Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg HS) and Sophie Kleeman (Newcastle, Australia/Newcastle HS) to help burden the load with the heap of players the Trojans have out currently. Manuel is among the conference' s best in rebounding as she is averaging 6.2 rebounds per game; while Kleeman is among the best in the conference in assists and assist/turnover ratio. Kleeman is averaging 3.5 assists per game, and is currently at 1.1 in assist/turnover ratio on the season; while playing 37.7 minutes per game.
Live statistics will be provided for both games featuring the Trojans in the tournament. If the Trojans match up with Georgia State University on Thursday, the game will be carried on GeorgiaStateSports.com for live video.
