Trojan Stampede Set To Open On Thursday
10/12/2010 11:51:13 AM | Rodeo
The Troy University men's and women's rodeo teams will make their only home appearance of the year this weekend when the annual Trojan Stampede comes to the Pike County Cattlemen's Association Facility.
The Trojans have had mixed results through the first three events of the fall schedule, but coach Josh Simmons said it is always nice to be able to stay home to compete.
“It is a relief to be at home,” Simmons said. “We are pretty road-weary after being on the road the last three weeks. It is always nice to compete in front of the home crowd.”
Performances will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening. Admission each night is $7 for adults and $5 for children. Fans will also be able to purchase three-day passes. An adult three-day pass is $15 and it is $10 for youth.
Gates will open at 6 p.m. each night.
The Troy women are coming into the Stampede on a high after winning last week at the West Alabama Rodeo in Livingston. The Trojans posted 315 points in the event to outscore the host Tigers by 55.
The Trojans men's team finished seventh out of eight teams in the event with a score of 165. East Mississippi Community College posted 715 points to win on the men's side.
“I feel really good about the women's team,” Simmons said. “They really competed well this past week to pull us out a win. It was even better because we were able to beat UWA because they are our rivals.”
The Troy women posted a pair of first place finishes at West Alabama. Sophomore Whitney Hazouri (St. Augustine, Fla.) won the break-away roping competition with a total time of 5.8 seconds for two runs, earning 145 points. Senior Mary Owens (Rome, Ga.) also placed in that event with a two-run total of 7.3 seconds, earning 70 points and a fourth place tie.
The Trojans also had two competitors post scoring totals in the goat tying event. Freshman Kassandra Smith (LaFayette, Ga.) brought home top honors with a two-run total of 18.2 seconds, earning 160 points. Another freshman, Lanie Culligan (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) finished tied for eighth, earning 10 points.
Another freshman, Kaley Dixon (Lakeland, Fla.) posted a fifth place finish in the barrel racing competition, earning 60 points for her team. Her first round run of 16.77 seconds was the best among 10 competitors.
“Our freshmen have done a really good job for us so far this year,” Simmons said.
On the men's side at West Alabama, the Trojans had only two scoring performances.
Sophomore Lane Taylor (Kinston, Ala.) earned 95 points with a third place finish in the team roping competition. Taylor was paired with D.D. Hunt of East Miss. CC in the event. The duo posted a time of 7.8 seconds in the first round and came back with a 12.5 second run in the second round.
Senior Stetson Aldridge (Folkston, Ga.) finished fifth in the calf roping event. He posted the top time of 9.8 seconds in the first round, but missed on his second run. He earned a total of 70 points.
The Troy women enter the Trojan Stampede in sixth place in the nine-team Ozark Region, but well within striking distance of second with a strong showing. UT Martin leads the region standings with 1260 points.
On the men's side, the Trojans are currently eighth in the 10-team regional standings. Missouri Valley College has a commanding lead with 2,200 points. The Trojans currently have 447.5 points.
