Caldwell begins his second season as a graduate assistant in 2020-21. He graduated from Radford University in 2019 where he earned Big South All-Academic Team honors from 2017-19. He was also an ITA Academic All-American in 2018-19. On the court he earned Second Team All-Big South honors in doubles in 2018 and singles in 2019 while serving as the team captain to a a squad that won the Big South Conference title in 2019.

"Alex is a great addition to the team. He has a lot of experience in pressure situation and brings his best under adversity. He finished his career in Radford where he clinched the victory in the conference final coming back from 6-3 3-1 down. He also went undefeated in the Conference Tournament in singles and doubles. I had the privilege to coach him and he is an outstanding leader including the fact that he was team captain the last two years."
