TROY, Ala. - Head coach Jake Wyman earned the first win at the helm of the Troy soccer program on Sunday afternoon, as the Trojans defeated Stetson, 2-0 in the home opener.

Troy (1-2-0) scored its goals courtesy of a header from Madisyn Marchesi and a perfectly placed shot into the top-left corner by Isabella Hartofelis. Defensively, Marchesi and Imani Hamilton anchored a backline that stifled the Hatters' offensive attack throughout the match.

The two sides opened the match quietly, with Julianna Liguori recording Stetson's (0-3-0) first shot of the day in the 12th minute. Layla Juliano registered Troy's first attempt two minutes later, firing wide.

Marchesi's breakthrough came in the 31st minute off a corner, giving Troy its first goal of the season. The Northern Arizona transfer headed in a perfectly placed inswinging ball from Irene Torres after Troy's Brooke Slater played a short ball from the far flag.

The first half drew to a close with the 1-0 scoreline, but not before Troy goalkeeper Taylor Richards made her first two saves of the match in the closing minutes. Richards finished with three saves overall.

It took just seven minutes into the second half for Troy to double its advantage, as a flicked ball from Alaina Uncapher found Hartofelis on the edge of the 18-yard box. The second-year midfielder clipped the ball perfectly over the outstretched arm of the Stetson goalkeeper for the second goal of her career.

Hartofelis nearly had her third later on, as a shot from a similar position struck off the crossbar.

Stetson could not find any quality chances down the stretch, allowing Troy to hold on comfortably for its first win of a new era.

"The girls went out and executed the game plan. I thought they did well in all three phases of the game including set pieces. We're delighted to get the first win of the year, and I thought the girls were excellent throughout the game."

On his first win at Troy...
"It's pretty surreal right now. I'm just proud of the girls. Obviously happy to get the win, but for me, they've worked really hard since July 19 and probably all summer long. To get to this point, I thought we probably deserved a little more after the Southeastern [Louisiana] game, and to finally come out on top; I'm proud of the group for all the work they put in and for it to pay off."

Notables

Madisyn Marchesi's game winner was the first goal of her career. The defender entered the match having taken eight shots on goal, all with Northern Arizona.
Troy earned its first clean sheet of the season and its first shutout in a winning effort since Aug. 24 of last season against Spring Hill.
First-year Irene Torres picked up the first assist of her career on Marchesi's goal. Brooke Slater was also credited with an assist on the goal, the third of her career.
Goalkeeper Taylor Richards earned the sixth win of her career, bringing her all-time record to 6-7-3.
Troy is now 5-6-1 all-time against Stetson.
