TROY, Ala. – With the game locked in a 1-1 stalemate in the bottom of the seventh inning, Kiley Huffman drilled a double down the first base line to give Troy a 2-1 walk-off win over Georgia State.
The Trojans (20-10, 3-3 SBC) capped off the sweep of the Panthers (19-14, 1-5 SBC) in a repeat of Friday night's pitcher's duel between Abby Lovell (5-3) and Makayla Stephens. Lovell carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, striking out seven batters and allowing four hits in her third straight complete game.
Huffman finished the contest 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, also making a highlight-reel catch in right field. Makaley Boswell reached base three times in the game, singling and taking two hit-by-pitches – she scored from first base to end it after getting plunked in the seventh.
Lovell forced three straight groundouts to second base in the first inning, and a Huffman single didn't amount to anything in the bottom half. Huffman made a diving snag in right field, and Lovell struck out one to keep the Panthers off the basepaths.
After homering off her on Friday, Lydia Kirby drew a walk from Stephens. Mia Tidmore followed it up with a bunt single, but Stephens was able to escape the inning. Another strikeout got Lovell through her third straight one-two-three inning.
The Trojans threatened in the third inning, with Boswell singling before an error and a hit by pitch loaded the bases. However, Troy couldn't take the lead. Lovell struck out another in the fourth.
In the fifth, Lovell ran her streak to 15 straight batters retired, striking out her fifth batter in the process.
The Trojans took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, manufacturing a run to go up 1-0. Boswell reached on a hit-by-pitch, advancing on a wild pitch and a flyout. Ella Cunningham was also hit by a pitch – Troy scored when Cunningham stole second and drew the throw, allowing Boswell to dash home.
Georgia State broke up Lovell's perfect game in the sixth inning with two singles, placing runners on second and third with one out. Lovell got a huge strikeout and a lazy fly ball to escape the inning with the lead.
While Mia Tidmore singled in the sixth inning, the Trojans couldn't widen the lead. Georgia State tied the game in the seventh inning, scoring on an RBI double to knot things up. The Panthers threatened to take the lead with runners on first and second, but Lovell worked out of the inning.
Boswell's hit by pitch set up Huffman to rope a ball down the right field line, winning it for the Trojans in the seventh.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a great win today, and a great series sweep against a very, very tough Georgia State team that's going to pick off several teams this year. All credit goes to our kiddos for hanging in and being resilient. Abby pitched incredibly, Bos does Bos things and finds a way to get on base and Kiley Huffman was big today. It was neat to see her get the game winner."
