NORFOLK, Va. – In one of its slowest shooting nights of the season, Troy men's basketball found a way to gut out a double overtime victory over Old Dominion, 83-77 on Wednesday night.
With five seconds remaining in regulation, Thomas Dowd rose up and knocked down a fadeaway jumper to tie the game at 64, sending Troy to its fifth overtime game this season.
Both teams made just one field goal in the first overtime period, and Theo Seng's corner three rimmed out as time expired to move the game to double overtime. An early five-point lead in the period allowed Troy to finish off the win in front of 5,263 fans in Chartway Arena.
Troy (14-6, 7-1) received double-double performances from Theo Seng and Thomas Dowd, as Seng tied a career-high in points with 24 and added a career-best 14 rebounds. Dowd delivered another dominant performance with 12 points and 15 boards.
Old Dominion (6-15, 3-6) was paced by Ketron Shaw, who scored a game-high 34 points. Shaw shot 14-of-22 from the field.
Old Dominion jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Seng knocked down his first three of the night at the 17:12 mark.
Although Seng made a pair of threes in the opening 20 minutes, the Trojans struggled from deep as a team, connecting on just 3-of-10 shots from beyond the arc.
The Monarchs played from ahead for the majority of the period, leading for 18:50 of game time, while the Trojans did not lead.
Cooper Campbell completed a four-point play that cut Old Dominion's lead to one at 31-30 at the under four media timeout.
Campbell added a driving layup minutes later that he also earned a trip to the line for giving him seven first half points.
Every time Troy put together a string of successful defensive possessions, Shaw had the answer for Old Dominion, shooting 6-of-8 and scoring 14 points as the teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at 35.
The second half began with both teams trading baskets, with Troy's three-point lead in the first minute of the second half being the largest advantage either team held until the Trojans took a four-point edge off a Cobi Campbell three with 10:41 left in regulation.
The Monarchs would take its third lead in the second half thanks to a dunk from Shaw – who scored 18 of his 34 points during the second half and overtime. The swing was one of 14 lead changes in the second half.
Troy did not record a field goal from the 9:02 mark until Dowd's equalizer at the end of the period, but 11 made free throws allowed it to keep pace with Old Dominion.
The Monarchs held two multiple two-point leads in the first overtime, but free throws from Seng and tough defense by both teams pushed the game into another five minutes of play.
Valdes buried a 3-pointer on the first possession of double overtime, and Dowd cashed in a layup the next trip down the floor, courtesy of a Seng steal.
Old Dominion cut the lead back down to two multiple times but clutch free throw shooting by Valdes iced the game, as the Trojans improved to 14-6 and 7-1 in Sun Belt play.
Quotable – Head Coach Scott Cross
"Thankful to the good Lord that we were able to pull that game out. I think it came down to the toughness of guys like Thomas Dowd and getting stops down the stretch. The rebounding, that's where it was won as well. I'm very thankful for the win. Another great basketball team we play on Saturday in Georgia Southern, but if you want to win a championship; you have to find a way to be ready to win in every game."
