PADUCAH, Ky. – The Troy women's golf team rallied past UNC Asheville on the final day of The Velvet Classic to claim the team title, and freshman Constanza Quiroga climbed seven spots up the individual leaderboard to win Troy's first individual title since 2019.
The Trojans entered the day two shots behind the Bulldogs at the top of the leaderboard; however, behind Quiroga's 1-under, including birdies on three of her final five holes, Troy clipped UNC Asheville by a shot to win a team title for a third consecutive season.
Quiroga pulled out in front of the field by a shot after birdies on 14 and 15, but a double on 16 put her a stroke back of the leaders. Following a par on the 17th, she birdied the 479-yard, par-5 18th to force a four-woman playoff. The true freshman birdied the opening playoff hole (No. 18), to make it birdies on four of her final six actual holes played, as she became the first Trojan to win an individual title since ShaeLee Scarberry and Nicole Lorup shared the crown at the Town & Country Invitational in the fall of 2019.
Troy led the field in par-3 scoring, par-5 scoring and pars, while finishing second in par-4 scoring and fourth in birdies. Quiroga closed the week with seven birdies, tied for eighth-most in the field, but had just nine bogeys or worse on the week, the second-fewest.
The shotgun start had the Trojans starting on the first three holes, and they made the turn at 2-over as a team and in first place. Quiroga made her move on the back, shooting 1-under, while the remainder of the counting scores closed with a 6-over.
Laura Fangmeyer had a bounce-back performance, tying for seventh place, just three shots back of the leaders. She climbed eight spots on the leaderboard thanks to a 1-over 73 in Tuesday's round, which featured birdies on the ninth and 17th.
Katelynn Altese recorded the first top 10 finish of her career, tying for ninth place at 9-over par. She closed out the week, shooting 3-over, including a birdie on the par-5 11th. Manya Saini tied for 16th place, shooting 11-over for the tournament after a 76 on Tuesday, while Mathilda Ringblom tied for 26th place at 15-over.
Troy's two individuals performed well over the week, as Victoria Stutts tied for 43rd place at 22-over and Juju Peterson tied for 54th place at 26-over par in her first career collegiate event.
