Women’s Golf Opens Sun Belt Championship Monday

TROY, Ala. – Coming off its best finish of the season, the Troy women's golf team heads to Point Clear, Ala., and the Dogwood Course at the Lakewood Golf Course for the Sun Belt Championship, beginning Monday.

Teams play three rounds of stroke play on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with the top four teams advancing to match play on Thursday. Troy finished sixth last season, just seven shots off a match play qualifying spot.

"We are really excited to be headed to the Sun Belt Championship playing our best golf of the season," head coach Randy Keck said. "We are headed back to a course we have played well the last couple of years and have an experienced line up that has been there multiple times. We have had two weeks off from competition to rest and work on the weaker areas of our games. We are excited to compete and will do our absolute best to bring the Sun Belt trophy to Troy."

Troy finished fourth at the ULM Invitational at the end of March as senior Laura Fangmeyer played her best event of the year, finishing 12th at 2-over, thanks to a 1-under 71 in the second round. Trojan golfers combined for three rounds under-par in the event, and Troy played without its No. 1 bag as Constanza Quiroga was sick the first two rounds.

Quiroga carries a 3.43 score vs. par into the Sun Belt Championship and 26 of her 27 rounds have counted towards the Troy card. She is tied with Victoria Stutts for the team lead with three rounds under-par. Manya Saini ranks second with a 5.41 score vs. par, while Stutts checks in with a 6.00 mark.

Fangmeyer, who boasts a 75.64 career stroke average, sits with a 77.96 mark on the year. Katelynn Altese heads to the event as Troy's substitute; she has a 6.47 score vs. par on the year.

Troy will be paired with Marshall for Monday's opening round, with the first twosome hitting the course at 9:30 a.m. from the 10th tee box.
