NORFOLK, Va. - Garrett Gainous cemented his place in the Troy record books on Friday, recording the 250th strikeout of his career with a six-strikeout performance in Troy's 7-0 victory over Old Dominion at Harbor Park.
Gainous entered the weekend with 244 strikeouts, and with his sixth strikeout of the game in the sixth inning, the senior right-handed pitcher became just the fourth pitcher in program history to punch out 250 hitters. He joins Jason Fawcett (425), Shane McCain (273) and Tyler Ray (259) at the top of the Troy record book.
The Cairo, Ga., native cruised through his seven shutout innings, holding Old Dominion to just two hits while walking four. Gainous pitched 1-2-3 innings in the first and fifth innings and allowed a base runner to reach third base just once in the fourth inning. Gainous' outstanding night came to an end at the end of the seventh, rolling a double play to close out the frame.Â
Offensively, the Trojans tallied nine hits on the night and knocked out ODU starter Ben Moore after four innings, scoring four runs against the left-hander. Sean Darnell legged out a potential double play to score Harrison Bowman in the third before the Trojans scored three in the fourth.
Noah Thigpen and Colby Frieda followed Gainous in relief with a pair of scoreless innings to close out the ballgame. Thigpen stranded a pair of base runners after allowing two hits in the eighth, while Frieda sat the Monarchs down 1-2-3 in the ninth, picking up one strikeout.Â
Game 2 between No. 18 Troy (23-8, 7-3 Sun Belt) and Old Dominion (8-19, 4-6 Sun Belt) is slated for 2 p.m. CT. Junior right-hander Noah Edders gets the start for the Trojans, while ODU will start junior lefty Dylan Brown.

Quotable - Head Coach Skylar Meade
"Gary's been here a long time. I thought this was one of his better outings I've gotten to be a part of. I always think of Louisiana and Indiana in 2022. The ULM game, where he had a week break, went seven and punched out 12. I thought in the conference tournament last year against Southern Miss he was really good. There are many others that I'm omitting, but he's such a winner, and it's fun to watch him get after it. The players really enjoy being on the field with him."
