NORFOLK, Va. - A dominant performance on the mound from Noah Edders helped No. 18 Troy clinch the series over Old Dominion in a 4-3 win at Harbor Park.
Edders pitched five no-hit innings to start the ballgame, and finished the day with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work, which was one shy of his season high. The junior right-hander held the Monarchs to three hits in total, allowing just two earned runs.Â
The Woodridge, Ill., native retired the first eleven batters he faced, and got some help from the errorless Troy defense. Shortstop Jakob Wax barehanded a ball that hopped off the second base bag, making it look like a routine play in the fourth inning, while second baseman Sean Darnell made a tremendous back-handed play in the fifth.
Troy got on the board early against Old Dominion lefty Dylan Brown, who entered the weekend as the Sun Belt strikeout leader with 54 punchouts on the season. The Trojans pegged Brown for three runs in 5.0 innings, striking out just four times as Brooks Bryan delivered an RBI single in the first inning while Jimmy Janicki launched a two-run homer out of the ballpark in left field in the fifth.
Darnell expanded Troy's lead to 4-2 with an RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Troy bullpen shut things down in the final 2.2 innings. Grayson Stewart got the Trojans out of the seventh with the 4-2 lead. When Stewart left after a leadoff double in the eighth, Jay Dill picked up him by allowing just one across to hold a 4-3 lead before sitting the Monarchs down 1-2-3 in the ninth, picking up his fifth save of the season.
Game 3 between No. 18 Troy (24-8, 8-3 Sun Belt) and Old Dominion (8-20, 4-7 Sun Belt) is slated for 12 p.m. CT. Senior righty Adam Falinski will get the start for the Trojans, while the senior lefty Blake Morgan will take the mound for the Monarchs.
