MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 4 seed Troy's run at the Sun Belt Conference Championship ended with a 6-2 loss to No. 1 seed Southern Miss at DABOS Park on Sunday.

The Trojans' (32-29) week in Montgomery ended with a 3-2 record, their most wins in the Sun Belt Tournament since 2018. Troy defeated No. 5 seed South Alabama (34-23) twice and went 1-2 against No. 8 nationally ranked Southern Miss (43-15), who will face Louisiana in Sunday afternoon's championship game.

In Sunday's loss, the Southern Miss pitching duo of Kros Sivley and Colby Allen limited the Trojans to two runs, allowing nine hits - eight of which were singles. Sivley opened with three shutout innings, while Troy scraped runs across against Allen in the fifth and eighth.

Sean Darnell led off the fifth with a triple down the first base line and scored on a Jabe Boroff groundout. In the eighth, Troy loaded the bases with an error and two singles, but scored just one on an RBI fielder's choice from Drew Nelson.

Nelson started on the mound before staying in at DH and worked back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to open the game, but the Golden Eagles strung together three hits, including an RBI double from leadoff man Seth Smith in the third. Nelson exited with one out and a 2-2 count to Joey Urban, and the Southern Miss centerfielder crushed Dylan Alonso's first pitch for a three-run blast to put the Golden Eagles ahead 4-0.

Troy used four arms behind Alonso in Judah Buckner, Brady Richardson, Chase Cartron and Tate Farquhar, keeping the Eagles to just two runs. Richardson stranded three inherited runners from Buckner in the fourth but issued a two-run homer to Davis Gillespie in the fifth. Farquhar stranded the bases loaded in the seventh after relieving Cartron, getting a strikeout and a flyout before tossing a hitless eighth.

Notables

Troy won three games in the Sun Belt Tournament for the first time since 2018 when the Trojans went 3-1. Troy earned an at-large bid to the Athens Regional that season.
Tate Farquhar tossed a season-high 1.2 innings out of the bullpen. He held the Golden Eagles without a hit.
Jimmy Janicki extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Steven Meier extended his reached base streak to 14 games, while Janicki, Aaron Piasecki and Jabe Boroff extended their streaks to 11 games.

"We were going to throw all the bullets, obviously, within reason. We shot our shot there. Drew, I thought he was very, very good. We had asked him on the bus to get 3-to-6 outs. You're going to get greedy with the lack of arms we had left. It obviously backfired. Alonso had struck out Urban, who is such a stud. He hit a homer in game one off of [Colby] Frieda, a professional arm, last year to give them a lead. He [Alonso] had struck him [Urban] out four different times on breaking balls. You've got to shoot your shot there. He hits .480 against lefties and he had seen all four pitches from Drew. We were going to take our shot. You've got to take your shot at some point to win the game. That was the moment if we were going to have a shot."
