NORFOLK, Va. - After winning the series' first two games, No. 18 Troy dropped the finale to Old Dominion 9-5 at Harbor Park on Sunday.
The Trojans put together a strong offensive performance, matching the Monarchs with 11 hits while striking out just three times. However, Troy could not overcome an early 4-0 deficit as ODU scored four runs on four hits and two walks against Trojan right-hander Adam Falinski in the second inning, capped off by a homer by shortstop Kyle Edwards.
Troy used seven pitchers in the game, the most they've had take the mound this season. Dylan King pitched a scoreless third inning but was relieved by Colby Frieda after issuing Edwards' second home run of the game and a walk in the fourth. ODU scored Frieda's inherited runner on an error, but the righty followed it with a 1-2-3 fifth with a pair of strikeouts.
Old Dominion put up three runs in the sixth as Troy made three pitching changes, using Frieda, Grady Gorgen, Kelly Crumpton, and Jacob Roettgen to get through the inning. Luke Lyon was the final pitcher to toe the rubber for Troy, going 1.2 innings. Lyon entered with the bases loaded in the seventh, rolling a double play to end the inning before pitching a scoreless eighth.
Offensively, Troy put one run across in the third as Harrison Bowman picked up an RBI single after a Steven Meier double. The Trojans tacked on another in the sixth on an RBI double by Houston Markham. Trailing 9-2 in the seventh, the Trojans put three across as Meier led off with a triple before a Blake Cavill RBI single, a Sean Darnell RBI double, and an error by the ODU second baseman that allowed Jimmy Janicki to reach safely and score Darnell.
Troy (24-9, 8-4 Sun Belt) sits in a three-way tie for first place in the Sun Belt standings with Coastal Carolina and Southern Miss after taking the series 2-1 against Old Dominion.

Quotable - Head Coach Skylar Meade
"You're not going to win when you give 12 freebies. Eight walks and four HBPs. The HBPs - it wasn't like we were calling fastball in. I'm totally cool with that, but not in the scenario in which we did it. I thought our offense grinded and took some good swings. Obviously, we had some times where we didn't execute, which was a little bit of a bugaboo this weekend, but I thought our compete was good. Only three strikeouts with the quality and high-level arms that they threw, I think, is certainly a winning recipe."
Next Up
Troy continues its road trip in the state of Virginia with a midweek matchup at Virginia Tech on Wednesday before returning to Sun Belt action with a three-game series at James Madison Friday-Sunday.
