Troy Freshmen Pierce Becker Advances Out of U.S. Open Local Qualifier

TROY, Ala. – Troy freshman Pierce Becker shot a 5-under 67 and advanced out of a seven-man playoff on Monday at a U.S. Open Local Qualifier at the Doublegate Country Club in Albany, Ga. Becker moves on to a Regional Qualifier for the right to play in the 125th U.S. Open Championship.
Becker opened with a bogey on the par-4 third and rebounded quickly with a birdie on the par-5 fifth. The bogey on No. 3 was his only blemish of the day, as he carded six total birdies, including a clutch one on the par-4 first (his 17th hole of the day) to move to 5-under.
The top seven golfers in the field earned a spot in the Regional Qualifier, and when the dust settled on the round, seven golfers were tied for the final two spots, including Troy senior Jake Springer.
In the playoff, the Vestavia Hills, Ala., native drained a 40-foot putt to clinch a spot in the next round.
The next qualifying takes place from May 19 until June 2, depending on the location and will consist of 36 holes. The 125th U.S. Open returns to the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., this summer.
